As the Federal Railroad Administration and Ohio collaborate on defining new passenger rail routes in the United States, small towns like Hilliard, Oxford, and Crestline are actively positioning themselves for potential new rail stations. This proactive approach demonstrates their dedication to regional connectivity, economic development, and inclusion.


Hilliard: Early Steps for Future Growth

In Hilliard, Ohio, AECOM is evaluating two adjacent locations along the existing CSX line for a future Amtrak station. A feasibility study by AECOM shows that these sites can handle up to 100,000 arrivals and departures annually, with several key benefits identified.

Strategic Location: The proposed sites near I-270 are easily accessible to 1.43 million people within a 30-minute drive, making Hilliard an attractive suburban station with convenient access to major highways and urban amenities.


City-Owned Land: The City of Hilliard owns most of the land needed for the station, cutting acquisition costs and speeding up development.


Multi-Modal Hub: The station is envisioned as a multi-modal transportation hub, integrating bus lines, trails, and on-demand transit services, aligning with broader goals of sustainable urban mobility.


Oxford: Station Design Starts

Oxford, Ohio is progressing towards securing an Amtrak stop by approving a contract with AECOM Technical Services for station plans for Amtrak's Cardinal. This is a crucial step in efforts to bring rail service to the community, supported by a $2.1 million grant.


Community Support: Miami University, a 19,000-student university in Oxford has also committed funding - highlighting the community’s unified vision for improved transportation infrastructure.


Risks and Rewards: While there are risks, including the lack of a firm commitment from Amtrak, the potential rewards of enhanced connectivity and economic development make the efforts worthwhile according to city leaders.
