COLUMBUS, OH – In a thrilling development for passenger rail advocates, a major milestone has been reached for the Midwest Connect corridor! In exciting update for rail advocates the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), along with partners in Indiana and Pennsylvania, has committed $650,000 in local funds toward the development of the passenger rail line that will finally connect Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ft. Wayne, and Chicago.

This is a powerful statement from local communities, demonstrating a unified and tangible commitment to bringing modern, efficient, and convenient passenger rail back to the heart of Ohio.

A Regional Partnership for Progress

This significant financial commitment was submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is a critical step in the official process. It's a testament to the collaborative spirit driving this project forward.

  • Total Commitment: $650,000 from local communities.

  • Ohio's Contribution: A remarkable $400,000 of the total came from communities in the Buckeye State.

  • Key Partners: The effort is led by MORPC, the City of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission.

“This funding is a vote of confidence for Ohioans that believe in the strong benefits that passenger rail will bring to Ohio individuals, communities, and businesses - Mitch Radakovich, All Aboard Ohio Chair”

Why This is a Game-Changer for Ohio

Central Ohio is the fastest-growing region in the Midwest and is projected to surpass three million residents by 2050. Despite this, it remains one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation without passenger rail service. This funding commitment is a direct and strategic move to change that.

This isn't just about connecting cities; it's about connecting people to opportunities.

“This is a strategic investment in the future quality of life in small towns, suburbs, and big cities across these routes. It will connect people to jobs, create economic development, and add a new way for fans to get to games, students to get to college, and family members to visit." - William Murdock, MORPC’s Executive Director

What's Next on the Journey?

This local investment is the key to unlocking the next phase of development. The funding commitment allows the Midwest Connect project to advance into Step Two of the FRA’s Corridor ID program.

This next step is where the vision starts to become a concrete plan. It will involve crucial planning for specific routes, station locations, and service details, positioning the entire region for significant future federal investment to make this line a reality.
