On February 14, All Aboard Ohio hosted our statewide virtual meeting, Acela in Action: The Operational Side of High-Speed Rail. We know how eager Ohioans are for fast, reliable, and modern passenger rail, and hearing directly from the experts building that future is always an energizing experience.
We had the privilege of speaking with Michelle Tortolani, Amtrak’s Vice President of Project Delivery, Fleet & Facilities. Michelle oversees a massive portfolio responsible for modernizing the trains and facilities that keep America moving. Her presentation gave us an exclusive look into Amtrak’s equipment pipeline, from the high-speed Northeast Corridor to the long-distance routes that serve Ohio today.
Here is a recap of the status' shared during the meeting.
Next Gen Acela: Setting the High-Speed Standard
While Ohio might not have high-speed rail yet, the Northeast Corridor is proving what is possible in the United States. Michelle detailed the journey of the Next Generation Acela program, which will elevate the premium service standard between Washington, D.C., and Boston.
The Fleet: Amtrak awarded two contracts to Alstom back in August 2016 to produce a fleet of 28 advanced trainsets.
The Goal: These trains are designed to provide a world-class, premium high-speed experience, serving as a blueprint for what modern, frequent rail service can look like in dense American corridors.
The "Airo" Era Begins Now
Amtrak’s new Airo trainsets are finally moving out of the factory and onto the rails. These state-of-the-art trains will ultimately replace the 50-year-old legacy cars, bringing faster acceleration, panoramic windows, and enhanced accessibility to state-supported and regional routes. Amtrak has taken delivery of two of these trains so far.
2026: The trains will officially enter revenue service later this year, debuting first on the Cascades route in the Pacific Northwest.
2027: The fleet will begin to operate on the Northeast Corridor.
2030: Airo trainsets will begin operating on the Downeaster route.
For Ohio advocates pushing for the 3C+D (Cleveland-Columbus-Cincinnati-Dayton) corridor, the Airo is exactly the type of modern equipment we could expect to see on robust, state-supported daytime routes.
Long-Distance Fleet Replacement
For current Ohio riders who rely on long-distance trains like the Lake Shore Limited, Capitol Limited, and Cardinal, this was the most highly anticipated update. We understand the frustration of riding on legacy equipment that has been operating for decades. Michelle confirmed that a massive overhaul is officially in motion. Read a full breakdown here: Finally, A Timeline: What Amtrak's Long-Distance Fleet Replacement Means for Ohio | All Aboard Ohio.
In a follow up after our meeting, Amtrak announced they plan to order single-level equipment.
Looking Ahead to Spring
The momentum for passenger rail in Ohio is building, and community involvement is the engine that drives it. As mentioned at the end of the meeting, please mark your calendars for our upcoming in-person event on April 18th, the Ohio Rail Summit. Keep an eye out for local chapter events in your area as well —we hope to see you there!
