The Survey

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has launched their 2024

Transportation Preference Survey.

The survey focuses on the ways we all choose to get around Ohio. Whether it is biking, driving, taking transit, or walking. Giving feedback on how you get around will help shape ODOT’s planning and priorities for Ohioans.

Historically, DOT’s are very car centric in the United States, favoring things like highway expansions over more passenger rail and buses. Because of this, it’s hard to make progress on transportation initiatives as our goals won’t be very high up on ODOT’s list. Not unless we make it a priority.

Our Take

When we take the survey, we plan to share that the need for robust passenger rail, improved public transportation, and connectivity to walking and biking infrastructure is extremely important to Ohio’s transportation future. If we come together to show ODOT why these priorities matter in this survey, we can all be part of making a meaningful impact on creating a better state.

St. Louis must spend $1.4 million to modify new trains that are too tall for their tunnels, but Cleveland cannot acquire these units due to critical voltage and door incompatibilities. Despite sharing the Siemens S200 model name, the fleets are mechanically unique, validating GCRTA's decision to custom-engineer its own vehicles rather than relying on shared designs.

Midwest passenger trains are selling out more often and ridership is climbing in the region. In Ohio this is a sign of future success but lack of new trains may constrain abilities to grow.
