In a strong indicator of sustained momentum for American passenger rail, Amtrak’s Board of Directors announced the creation of a new System Expansion Committee. Approved in late July 2026, the Board-level committee is tasked with advancing passenger rail growth, managing expanded frequencies, and guiding strategic investments across the national network.

The formation of this committee is in response to the operational needs of a growing network. As Amtrak works to understand how the railroad will manage and implement new services, this group will serve as the primary forum for advancing corridor development and expanding state-supported partnerships. For example, some regional projects, such as the Denver-Ft. Collins route, are actively moving outside of the Federal Railroad Administration's initial Corridor ID program so they can become operational sooner rather than later.

The creation of the System Expansion Committee comes precisely as demand across the Amtrak network continues to surge. Recent ridership and revenue statistics demonstrate that the agency is rapidly outpacing its own long-term growth targets.

Key 2026 Performance Stats:

• Surging Ridership: Amtrak ridership has been growing year over year with June ridership numbers increasing 7% vs 2025 and indicating even higher in July.

• Ahead of Schedule: Annual ridership for the 12-month period (July 2025–June 2026) is growing at a pace sufficient to meet. Amtrak’s FY28 goal of 37 million annual rides a full two years early, as defined in the FY24 service plan.
