New name reflects broader collaboration, growing momentum for passenger rail

COLUMBUS, OH - All Aboard Ohio today announced the launch of the Inaugural Ohio Rail Summit. This statewide convening will bring together public officials, transportation professionals, advocates, and regional partners to discuss the future of passenger rail in Ohio and the Midwest.

The Ohio Rail Summit will take place on April 18 at the Energy Advancement & Innovation Center, located on The Ohio State University campus.

The Summit comes at a pivotal moment for passenger rail, as Ohio and neighboring states engage with new federal programs, regional planning efforts, and long-term transportation investments that are reshaping how rail projects move from concept to implementation.

The Ohio Rail Summit replaces the organization’s longtime Annual Meeting, reflecting the expanded scope and growing importance of passenger rail discussions in Ohio. The new format emphasizes collaboration across sectors and regions, recognizing that passenger rail development is increasingly shaped by coordination among public agencies, local leaders, and regional partners.

“The Ohio Rail Summit reflects how the conversation has changed,” said Mitch Radakovich, Board Chair for All Aboard Ohio. “Passenger rail in Ohio is no longer a niche issue. It is part of a broader discussion about mobility, infrastructure, and regional connectivity, and it requires a forum that brings those voices together.”

Additional details can be found at https://www.allaboardohio.org/ohio-rail-summit; an agenda and speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.

We had the privilege of speaking with Michelle Tortolani, Amtrak’s Vice President of Project Delivery, Fleet & Facilities. Michelle oversees a massive portfolio responsible for modernizing the trains and facilities that keep America moving. She discussed Amtrak's new Acela high speed trains, new Airo trains, and the long-distance fleet trains.

Finally, A Timeline: What Amtrak's Long-Distance Fleet Replacement Means for Ohio

Today, Amtrak’s 55th anniversary isn’t all that’s being celebrated. The U.S. is experiencing a veritable resurgence of passenger rail which some have described as a renaissance. Demand is at an all-time high, and routes from the west coast to the east coast are reporting unprecedented volumes of passengers. Rather than fighting to preserve a dying train network, Amtrak is breaking its own records every year.

55 Years of Amtrak - How Amtrak Succeeds

Something is shifting in Ohio. For decades, passenger rail has lived in conversation, in planning documents, in long-term strategies, and in “someday” language that felt important but distant. The ideas were sound, the case was strong, but the momentum often felt just out of reach.
