Passenger Train Returns to Columbus - The 250 Buckeye Train

If you were anywhere near the Arena District in Columbus this morning, you might have heard the rumble of something truly special. Today, the 250 Buckeye Train officially rolled out of the capital, kicking off the America 250-Ohio Transportation Celebration. Packed with passengers, this excursion is making its way to the historic Dennison Depot to celebrate Ohio's deep roots in transportation.

It’s a nod to the golden age of the railroad that helped build our state and traveling the same historic routes once taken by trains with passengers, troops, and presidents. But while this ride is all about celebrating 250 years of American history, it also gave us a look at what's next.

A huge shoutout to Threads user @theugly709, who shared some amazing shots of the event. They posted photos of the train and the engines getting ready for the 240-mile roundtrip. But the photo that really got us talking was a shot taken right out the passenger window as the train passed directly underneath the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Why is that so exciting? Because that exact spot is where the future Columbus Amtrak Station is slated to go.

Seeing a passenger train roll through that downtown corridor today makes the vision of a fully connected, modern passenger rail network in Ohio feel more real than ever. Imagine a world where you can hop on a sleek new Amtrak train right under the Convention Center to seamlessly travel across our state's developing rail corridors. That's the kind of modern station infrastructure and connectivity that transforms a city.

Events like the Buckeye Train excursion are a reminder of how vital trains have always been to our communities. They aren't just nostalgia; they are the blueprint for our future. It's moments like this that remind us why it is so crucial to secure the state funding necessary to advance our transportation budgets and make everyday passenger rail a reality again.

Whether you're riding the rails this weekend to Dennison or just following the journey through photos online, we're looking forward to seeing trains on these rails more often. Find out more about the 3C+D route here.

The Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission (MIPRC) has secured a $1.84 million federal CRISI grant to launch Invest Midwest, a comprehensive passenger rail planning initiative. However, Ohio remains excluded from this regional network development after state legislators removed a $25,000 membership appropriation from the 2026-2027 budget, leaving the state without a seat at the table as neighboring states map out the future of Midwest transit.
