The vision of linking major Midwest cities with passenger rail service is becoming a reality with the recent developments in the Midwest Connect Corridor project. Spearheaded by a collaboration between the City of Fort Wayne, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC), this initiative aims to establish a vital rail link connecting Chicago, Fort Wayne, Columbus, and Pittsburgh.


In December 2023, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded a $500,000 Corridor Identification and Development (CID) grant to the City of Fort Wayne. This grant is instrumental in laying the groundwork for a comprehensive Service Development Plan that will guide the implementation of passenger rail service across these critical urban centers.

Potential route for Midwest Connect Corridor

To ensure the success of this ambitious project, HNTB Corporation, a leading consultant with a robust portfolio in transportation planning, has been brought on board. With a budget of up to $450,000, HNTB will focus on reviewing past studies, identifying gaps, and establishing a detailed scope, schedule, and budget for the remaining planning efforts. Their work is expected to continue through June 2025.


HNTB’s extensive experience, which includes involvement in over 40 passenger rail corridors nationwide, makes them an invaluable partner in this endeavor. The firm’s holistic approach, covering everything from feasibility studies to construction management, positions the Midwest Connect Corridor project for success.

The project has garnered widespread support from key stakeholders, including All Aboard Ohio, the Northern Indiana Passenger Rail Association (NIPRA), and several regional planning commissions. These partnerships underscore the regional significance of the Midwest Connect Corridor and its potential to drive economic development, enhance connectivity, and promote sustainable transportation solutions.


Parag Agrawal, Chief Mobility & Infrastructure Officer at MORPC, highlighted the transformative impact of the project, stating, “By enhancing connectivity and accessibility, we are not only fostering economic development but also promoting sustainable and efficient transportation solutions for the future.”
