Momentum Is Building: The Inaugural Ohio Rail Summit

Something is shifting in Ohio. For decades, passenger rail has lived in conversation, in planning documents, in long-term strategies, and in “someday” language that felt important but distant. The ideas were sound, the case was strong, but the momentum often felt just out of reach.

Something is shifting in Ohio. For decades, passenger rail has lived in conversation, in planning documents, in long-term strategies, and in “someday” language that felt important but distant. The ideas were sound, the case was strong, but the momentum often felt just out of reach.

This moment feels different. Across the Midwest, states are coordinating more intentionally than ever before. Federal programs are accelerating infrastructure investment. Communities both large and small are positioning themselves for stronger connections, economic competitiveness, and long-term growth. Conversations that once felt theoretical are becoming actionable, and partnerships that once felt exploratory are becoming aligned.

And now, Ohio is bringing that momentum into one room.

The Inaugural Ohio Rail Summit is more than a conference. It is a statewide convening of leaders, advocates, planners, business voices, and community partners who understand that modern mobility is not optional; it is essential. The Summit exists to align energy, elevate strategy, and ensure that Ohio is not merely participating in this regional shift but is helping to shape it.

From regional planning leaders to national advocates, from small-town officials to emerging transportation voices, the Summit reflects the full breadth of Ohio’s rail coalition. The momentum is not coming from a single city, a single corridor, or a single organization. It is building across regions, across sectors, and across generations.

This is not a niche conversation. It is a statewide one, and it demands statewide coordination.

A New Kind of Rail Conversation

Rail is often framed as an either/or proposition: freight or passenger, urban or rural, visionary or practical. That framing oversimplifies what is, in reality, a deeply interconnected transportation ecosystem.

The Summit challenges that narrative.

The future of rail in Ohio is not about competition between systems, but about coordination among them. It is about understanding how freight and passenger networks intersect, how infrastructure investments ripple outward into communities, and how thoughtful planning can support both economic development and mobility access. When freight and passenger systems align strategically, the benefits extend well beyond the tracks themselves.

This is not nostalgia for a bygone era. It is about ensuring that Ohio’s communities remain connected, competitive, and prepared for what comes next.

The Summit Experience

The momentum begins the evening before the Summit on April 17th with a public reception at The East Market in Ohio’s historic trolley district, a setting that reflects both where we have been and where we are headed. The reception offers an opportunity to connect informally with fellow attendees, speakers, and partners before the formal program begins.

Energy Advancement & Innovation Center | Columbus, OH

Doors open at 8:15 a.m., with programming beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tickets include both breakfast and lunch, and dietary accommodations will be available during registration to ensure a welcoming experience for all attendees. The full-day program is designed to move from inspiration to practical alignment, creating space not only for discussion but for forward movement.

We are also including a few ways for attendees to carry the energy of the Summit with them. Raffle tickets will be available at the event (cash only) for $2 each or three for $5. Prizes include two (2) tickets to the sold-out 250 Buckeye Train departing Sunday from Newark (a $350 value), a curated gift basket from the Ohio Railway Museum, and an AAO merchandise bundle featuring our canvas tote and select favorites. A limited selection of AAO merchandise will be available onsite, and brand-new Ohio Rail Summit apparel and items are already available online starting at $21.99, because momentum should not end when the program concludes.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Organizations that want to be part of this moment can also support the Summit as sponsors. Prospective sponsors are invited to join the City of Hilliard and other civic and business partners in demonstrating that coordinated rail investment is both a mobility strategy and an economic one.

Sponsorship levels range from $500 to $2,500, and the deadline to participate is March 18. For businesses, municipalities, and civic organizations that believe Ohio’s transportation future is worth investing in, this is an opportunity to align visibly with a growing statewide coalition.

Ohio stands at an inflection point.

The investments being discussed today will shape mobility, economic development, and regional connectivity for decades to come. The Ohio Rail Summit is for those who recognize that the future is not something we inherit; it is something we build through coordination, commitment, and shared vision.

Seats are limited, and momentum is accelerating.

Be in the room where Ohio decides whether it will shape what comes next… or simply follow it.

Finally, A Timeline: What Amtrak's Long-Distance Fleet Replacement Means for Ohio

Today, Amtrak’s 55th anniversary isn’t all that’s being celebrated. The U.S. is experiencing a veritable resurgence of passenger rail which some have described as a renaissance. Demand is at an all-time high, and routes from the west coast to the east coast are reporting unprecedented volumes of passengers. Rather than fighting to preserve a dying train network, Amtrak is breaking its own records every year.
